Foundation for Senior Care

Meeting the ongoing healthcare needs of Fallbrook’s seniors

It can be difficult for seniors to ask for help, but the Foundation for Senior Care is designed to meet the ongoing healthcare needs of seniors, making every day life as simple and convenient as possible. The Foundation for Senior Care performs valuable assistance within its three core programs: the Care Van, Senior Care Advocacy and Senior/Adult Day Care Center.

For seniors living in the greater Fallbrook areas including Bonsall, Rainbow and De Luz who are unable to drive, the Care Van program is there to help by providing free transportation when it is most needed – to doctors’ appointments, physical therapy, grocery store, pharmacy, and their Senior/Adult Day Care Center.

According to Dotty Metcalf, executive director, over 2,000 senior citizens rely upon this service to get them to important appointments. Lately, the Foundation has even been providing transportation for spouses to visit their loved one in the hospital or in skilled nursing. The Foundation has seen an increase in this need.

When a senior needs more assistance, a Senior Care Advocate can make life easier for the whole family by providing an array of wonderful support, ranging from scheduling doctor appointments and accompanying a senior to the doctor’s office, buying groceries and setting up minor home repairs. Elderly home safety issues are also assessed and the installation of grab bars has been an enormous help for seniors. There are many seniors living alone that do not know about the service and could benefit greatly from it.

Another resource offered is the Senior/Adult Day Care Center. A hub of activities including arts & crafts and gentle exercises, it is the perfect destination for those seniors who need extra assistance or may be left alone during the day. Family members have complete peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are cared for at the center in a safe and secure environment.

Coordinating and providing care to the senior community is the essence of the Foundation for Senior Care.

“We are always looking for new opportunities to help seniors,” said Metcalf, who was recently appointed by Supervisor Bill Horn to be a representative on the Aging and Independence Services Advisory Council. “For example, we collaborate with You Are Not Alone (YANA), the Sheriff’s senior volunteers by sharing resources and checking in on seniors.”

The Foundation for Senior Care hosts two fundraisers through the year helping to raise awareness: Paws in the Park, which is always the third Saturday in April, and Dinner with the Docs, typically held in the fall.

As a nonprofit, the Foundation appreciates donations that help it continue its services to seniors. One hundred dollars provides a senior with transportation for a month. A donation of $500 helps a low-income senior attend day care part-time for a month. Donations can be made online.

The Foundation is currently looking for those who are interested in helping seniors and willing to offer their time as a member on the board of directors.
