Artist profile: Scott Thom
When Scott was two years old he and his family moved from Minneapolis, Minnesota to a much warmer climate in Long Beach, California. His father worked for the Navy. Scott developed a love for geometrically designed shapes and buildings. At the young age of six he realized already that his call was to be an artist.
The Thom family moved to Garden Grove where Scott attended high school. In 1968 Scott was drafted into the army and shipped to a base in Kaizerslautern, Germany. After his military duty Scott went to Cal State Fullerton to embark on a quest toward an Architectural major. Unfortunately calculus sank his ambition. He, however, loved the art classes and changed his major to Art, which to this day he never regretted.
For over 30 years now, Scott has produced and sold fine art. Art defines what he does and who he is. His art is “visionary”, which means it is created first in his mind’s eye, then re-created on canvas. He discovered long ago that his visions were best created using the airbrush, a highly technical tool producing the soft glowing effects he sees. Scott says:” since my works are first visions, I must surmise that they are in actuality spiritual before they are physical. The images I paint are always positive, life affirming and perhaps a bit magical.”
Scott’s work is in the collection of such notable clients as Shirley MacLaine, Kenny Loggins,
Herb Alpert, Universal/MCA, CBS, 20th Century Fox. Scott Thom lives right here
in Fallbrook with Carolyn, his wife of 30 years, who teaches Art. They have a
25-year-old daughter Amber, who lives and teaches P.E. in Phoenix, Arizona. Five
years ago on Memorial Day their 18-year-old daughter Brooke, was killed by a
drunk driver. Brooke was a very promising artist who inherited her artistic
talents from both her parents. She was accepted to study art at Humboldt State
University. It was a devastating time for Scott, Carolyn, Amber and all the
friends who loved Brooke. The college funds, set aside for Brooke, were
dedicated in her honor to a scholarship fund for talented young art students.
What is the airbrush? The airbrush is a highly technical painting tool developed around the turn of the century. It was created to retouch photographs in a way which was invisible to the naked eye. Photo prints that were enhanced and had their problems solved through the use of the airbrush were much more appealing than photos which were not retouched. Later, the airbrush became popular with commercial illustrators and cartoon animators, and it remains very popular and widely used throughout the art world.
Fine artists have always enjoyed the fresh and uniquely vibrant “look” their paintings have when created with the airbrush. To the present day, the airbrush is used by anyone wishing to apply paint to just about anything, from skateboards and t-shirts to canvases and wall murals. And although it is a very technical instrument, it is not difficult to learn or very expensive to purchase.
