The Insider's Guide to Fallbrook, California

A short 18-mile drive from the Pacific Ocean, the greater Fallbrook area is well known for its gently rolling hills, lush groves, ancient oak trees, equestrian and walking trails, riparian areas, nature preserves, and Mediterranean climate.

Equestrian Activities

Numerous equestrian properties and businesses abound in the area.

San Luis Rey Downs
San Luis Rey Downs boasts the only auxiliary training track continuously approved since 1984 by the California Horse Racing Board. The facility offers a one-mile track and a smaller training track, as well as an equine pool and many more amenities.

Vessels Stallion Farm
The renowned ranch, Vessels Stallion Farm, boasts the most sought-after Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses in the world. Its beautiful pastures and barns are fit for the royal horses they breed at Vessels.

REINS
Fallbrook also offers unique opportunities for riders of all ages and capabilities. REINS, a “Therapeutic Horsemanship Program,” gives riders with physical challenges an opportunity to experience a view of the world from the saddle. REINS is always on the lookout for volunteers to help with horseback riding lessons as well as with horse care.

Rawhide Ranch
Rawhide Ranch in Bonsall offers a unique camping experience, with seven-day and weekend overnight camps. A quaint replica of an “old west” town is the focal point of this 37-acre ranch. A typical camp schedule includes horseback riding, western crafts, archery, drama, swimming, and riflery (BB guns for the young children).

Horse enthusiasts can be seen regularly enjoying the Santa Margarita River trail, meandering through nature’s bounty.

In addition to the farms mentioned, many other fine equine boarding facilities are available.
